The Joy of Oyster Roasts & Crab Feasts

Oyster Roast 2

Oyster roasts are a fun way to socialize in Virginia!

Love to entertain?  Enjoy a Virginia tradition…

Break out the Old Bay seasoning and host a festive oyster roast or crab feast!  Every summer and every Thanksgiving, my family celebrates the joy of togetherness in this wonderfully relaxed way.

Area fishmongers can keep you in-the-know about what to expect for prices — and if your favorite crustacean delicacy is in season or not.

It’s also fun to harvest a bounty deliciousness from our local waterways!  As good stewards of the majestic Chesapeake Bay, many waterfront homeowners are now becoming oyster farmers!  They also enjoy recreational the harvest of blue crabs, by setting out their own crab pots.  Here’s a resource about gear marking and size/catch restrictions.

Hmm, perhaps you don’t live by the water?

Good news, you can partake of waterfront pleasures like fishing and dip-net crabbing from our public piers!  Quick question first… if asked, could you tell a ‘Jimmy’ (male) crab from a ‘Sook’ (female)?  It matters, so be wise and learn more about the rules before you go crabbing.

Want to keep it super simple?  Opt for dining on yummy seafood at Chuck-a-mucks or Merroir, as this river girl often likes to do!
